Scottish energy company SSE has installed the world’s deepest offshore wind turbine almost 17 miles off the coast of Angus.
The 2,000-tonne turbine foundation was installed at a depth of over 58 metres on Easter Sunday as part of the £3 billion Seagreen offshore wind farm, which is being developed in partnership with French oil company Super Major Overall.
Seagreen’s 112th turbine out of 114, the foundation is a record-breaking installation that will help power the equivalent of 1.6 million homes.
The 1GW wind farm began generating electricity in August 2021 and will be fully operational by this summer.
SSE’s Chief Executive Officer, Alistair Phillips-Davies, said that the installation marked a significant step towards completing the project and demonstrated how the company is pushing the boundaries of technology to drive change.
SSE plans to invest £12.5 billion by 2026 in projects – the Seagreen wind farm is part of this plan, and the company aims to invest a total of £24 billion in the UK alone by the end of the decade.
Graham Stuart, the Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, said that the installation was another milestone for Scotland and the UK, which is the world’s leading offshore wind industry.
